A woman once found herself facing a season she had never expected. Her job was uncertain, the bills were mounting, and a situation within her family had become increasingly difficult. She prayed, but nothing seemed to change.
One morning, with her Bible open, she prayed, “I don’t know how this is going to work out. I can’t see a way forward. But I know you have promised never to leave me. So today, I choose to trust you.”
Nothing changed that morning. The bills were still there. The uncertainty remained. But something had changed in her. She had stopped allowing what she could see to determine what she believed. She had chosen to see her circumstances through the promises of God.
That is faith.
Faith is trusting God enough to live according to what He has said, even when what we see does not yet match what He has promised. Faith takes God at His word and allows His promises to shape how we think, respond and live.
Faith Takes God at His Word
Hebrews 11 gives us a picture of people who heard what God had said and acted upon it, even when they could not yet see the outcome.
Faith does not deny our circumstances. It sees beyond them. Life gives us many reasons to doubt God, but faith brings our circumstances before a God whose promises are greater than them.
Faith does not require us to pretend difficult things are easy. It calls us to bring them before God and trust that what he has said remains true, even when our circumstances seem to say otherwise.
Faith Holds on to God’s Promises
Hebrews points us towards promises that sustain us in difficult seasons. Through Jesus, we have a better hope and can draw near to God. We have a great High Priest who understands our weaknesses, so we can approach God’s throne with confidence to receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews also reminds us: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Therefore, we can say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”
These are promises to live from. When we fail, there is mercy; when we are weak, grace; when we are afraid, the assurance that we are not abandoned. Faith takes God’s promises into the places where life is hardest.
Faith When We Cannot Yet See
God’s promises often concern realities we cannot yet see. We may pray for a breakthrough and still have to wait. We may ask for direction and not know which way to go. We may believe God is working while seeing little evidence of it.
Faith does not mean we never struggle; it means our struggles do not have the final word. Sometimes faith means taking a courageous step; sometimes waiting, praying, or simply refusing to let go of God.
We may not be able to see what God is doing, but we can trust who God is.
This World Is Not Our Home
Hebrews 11 lifts our eyes beyond our present circumstances. The people described there understood that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. They longed for a better country, a heavenly one, and looked forward to the city whose architect and builder is God.
This gives us an important perspective: this world is not our home, and this life is not our final destination.
Our circumstances matter, but they are not ultimate. Our possessions, achievements, disappointments and struggles are temporary. We belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and our ultimate hope is the eternal city God has prepared for His people.
Knowing this does not mean withdrawing from the world. It means eternity changes how we live: forgiving when it costs us, serving when nobody notices, giving generously and persevering through difficulty.
Faith looks beyond what is temporary to what is eternal.
What Are You Looking At?
Perhaps the question is not, “Do I have faith?” but, “What am I looking at?”
If all we see are our circumstances, fear can become bigger than God. If all we see are our limitations, impossibility can define us. If all we see are our losses, despair can shape our future.
Faith lifts our eyes. God is faithful, Jesus is our great High Priest, grace is available, God has promised never to leave us, and our future is secure in Christ.
We cannot always change our circumstances, but we can choose the reality from which we live. So when life is difficult, look again – beyond the circumstances to God’s promises, beyond today’s struggle to eternal hope, and beyond what you can see to the God who has spoken.
Faith is the lens through which the eternal becomes visible to us in the present.
A Life That Pleases the Father
This is ultimately what pleases the Father: not that we have perfect faith, but that we trust the One who is perfectly faithful.
Hebrews 11 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” This does not mean that God expects us never to experience fear, questions or uncertainty. Faith turns towards God in the middle of all those things.
The life of faith keeps saying, “God, I trust you.” It trusts Him when the way forward is unclear and holds on to His promises when circumstances seem to contradict them.
It takes the next step even when it cannot see the whole journey, and it keeps looking towards home.
So let us take God at His word, lay hold of His promises, persevere through difficulty and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and the eternal city He has prepared.
Because when God is trustworthy, faith is not a risk. It is the only truly secure way to live.
A Prayer for Faith
Father, teach us trust when we cannot see,
To hold to your Word and your promise to me.
When fear fills our hearts and the pathway is unclear,
Remind us, O Lord, that you are always near.
Lift up our eyes to the hope that is sure,
Beyond this brief world to the city secure.
Our home is with you, our future is bright,
So help us walk on by the strength of your light.
Holy Spirit, help us to trust and obey,
To follow our Saviour and walk in his way.
When we cannot see, help us trust what you say,
And hold to your promises that never decay.
Amen.
